I decided to go with a Journalistic approach, reporting on how Covid 19 has changed the way kids are celebrating their birthdays. I adopted this style because the pandemic has changed many things, we hear about supply and demand, numbers of infected, loss and survival but reporting on how the virus has affected family’s traditions is story worthy also.
I enjoyed putting this video together for my sister. She had a birthday while in quarantine. Her friends decorated their parent’s cars and came up our street honking their horns and were treated to Kona Ice instead of the traditional cake and ice cream. Cake and ice-cream, and the singing of Happy Birthday came later via Zoom. I decided to do the assignment on Birthdays during Covid-19 so that my sister had a documented piece of what her celebration was like.
I had a hard time editing and doing the voice over so that it looked and sounded good. It was fun putting something together that documented this crazy time for my sister.
I was surprised by the length of video I actually came away with. I thought I would have lots of video to work with however the reality was I only had less than three minutes. I needed to think about how I shot every video. One of my shots is vertical rather than horizontal. I also did so many takes of my voice, I got too frustrated and finally did the voice over.
I see myself using video to enhance a blog, but I prefer to put the video to music. I do not feel that I sound so great, I do not sound natural or comfortable. I decided to change the voice of my video, for more impact, and because I didn’t like mine. I felt that the story was more powerful using my sister’s voice.
